About Walls / sobre paredes

A wall defines and divides space, yet it is also a place in itself — a surface where events occur and meanings unfold.

About Walls is a series of paintings that explores the wall as both architectural reality and pictorial possibility. Engaging with the tradition of trompe l’oeil, the works move beyond mere illusionism to examine the tension between the flat surface and the virtual spaces it can evoke. They invite reflection on the phenomena that arise in the encounter between wall, painting, and observer.

Since antiquity, the mesmerising effect of trompe l’oeil has captivated viewers, opening onto realms of desire and threat, presence and absence. The wall becomes a threshold: a passage to another reality, like the ladder in Going Up, or a stage for traces of unseen existence, such as the shadow in Light Presence.

In this sense, the series situates itself in the interstice between material architecture and the imagined virtuality of painting. It probes the dialogue between the tangible and the imagined, where the “realisation” of an image renders visible the space of transition — between one place and another, between reality and creation.
